DOUBT:
After going up or before going down?
Before going up or after going down?
The dichotomy of these two images incites us to think about the cyclical nature of our existence, the inevitability of change, and the transience of time. It evokes the setting of the human condition, always fluctuating between confidence and uncertainty. The stairs, with their precise geometry and their escape towards the known-unknown, are a constant reminder that life is an indefinite process of ups and downs, where each end is the beginning of a new journey and each step, whether upwards or downwards, is a declaration of intent and an act of faith towards the path of life.
This diptych questions the temporal sequence of human action, through these two images captured from opposite angles. It induces a meditation on the relativity of progress and regression. The black and white intensifies the drama inherent in these decisions suspended in time, transforming the mundane act of ascending or descending into a parable of existence.
The “Paradox of Being” is a philosophical theme, fascinating and complex. In general terms, it refers to the tension and contradiction inherent in human nature, and to our understanding of the world in which we live. Essentially, there is a conflict between our subjective perceptions and objective reality, and this can often lead to frustration and confusion.
Absence is not an omission, but an invitation to project our own narratives, filling the void with our doubts and certainties.
