Remarks for the catalog
He walked in a tunic, the same Rimbaud from The Drunken Boat, a practitioner of an equestrian circus; Chaplin, vagabond and visionary, had to see Hitler to film The Great Dictator.
There has always been a need for expression, but how is today’s reality described? Notice how it is about electronics, alienation, atomic energy, space travel, marketing, and virtual reality. How does modern man perceive himself? Concepts like alterity and identity have become protagonists of thought and culture, especially in America discontent with the violation of its natural historical course.
Today, we talk about the great plastic arts, which cannot be narrated and therefore go straight to the essence of expression. If music is pure abstraction of the senses, then the plastic arts are the abstraction of form. This is why they transcend words, go beyond language, and impose themselves in the world of symbols with the dignity of those who understand their scope. They walk firmly; they dominate space.
Man is, by excellence, a creator, starting from his reflection on reality to return to himself through the delight of a work. In this way, art converges with the intricate wiring of disciplines that result in contemporary art. It is not true that we are postmodern; we are merely waiting to find the new name. We will be the novísimos (the newest), the updated ones, the novatoristas (the innovators), depending on the country in which the denomination is defined. What is clear is that the trend we follow leads us to a point where a mason becomes an installation artist, and an engineer performs interventions in public spaces. If Gothic was the pinnacle of crafts, never has there been such certainty in the creative power of man.
Spaces like this are no longer sufficient. I hope I am not the first to say it. The streets, the plazas, the walls—none of them can provide the foundation for today’s avalanche of ingenuity. One day, we will either leave our homes or enter them to live and think performatively, just as we now feel captivated by the quality of this exhibition. With its contemporary and genuine discourse, it directs our gaze toward the fundamental themes of our existence.
