Curatorial Statement
From March 19 to April 10, 2011, Kokerei Hansa will present a selection of Cuban video art from the last thirty years.
Under the title “Spray,” this year’s opening exhibition of the Hochhaus Hansa project will showcase a journey through Cuban video art of the past thirty years. Cuban curators Frency Fernandez and Toni Correa present a rare selection of stirring, exciting, sad, loving, and joyful media artworks that, despite their sometimes-mature age, appear surprisingly contemporary. Some of these works have never been shown outside of Cuba.
Embedded in the architecture of the past century, visitors will be transported to the present time of Cuban video art. The video installations unfold a special effect in the context of the decommissioned industrial site, showing how creativity has developed despite or perhaps because of the contradictions of this Caribbean Island. An exhibition that arouses curiosity and demonstrates to every viewer that Cuba is much more than rum and music.
Exhibition: SPRAY. Cuban Video Art. Exhibition curated by Antonio Correa and Frency Fernandez. A cooperation between the Foundation for Industrial Heritage and Historical Culture and artlab 21.
